Recently, the LEE Vols boys varsity soccer team has seen a dip in performance following their dominant 8-0 start. The Vols stand 4-2-2 in their last eight games, showing a growing weakness on defense and offense.
Prior to the start of district play, the Vols were ranked number one in the state and looked unstoppable after beating the Central Catholic Buttons 3-1. Now, the Vols are struggling to beat teams with losing records like the Churchill Chargers, barely snatching the win with a score of 2-1.
Their two losses on the season have been to district rivals: the Brandeis Broncos and the Johnson Jaguars. Both games ended with the Vols only scoring one goal, and notably, they have only scored more than one goal in three of their last seven games.
When asked about how the season has gone since the Central Catholic game, team captain Reid Brenner gave us a run down. “It’s not the greatest. It’s been fun, but we don’t know how to score.” Following that, he said, “I don’t know how locked in we are…as in we’re not winning every game anymore, but we’re still confident we can win.”
When asked about the team’s biggest weakness, he confidently responded with “scoring.” “We’ll have the ball in front of their goal the whole half, and it never goes in the net,” he said.
This struggle has definitely been a huge weakness and was exposed in their first loss of the season against the Brandeis Broncos. The Vols were only able to score one goal during this game, and while part of that was due to injuries, they still had multiple chances at a goal they failed to follow through on.
Their most recent game against the Clark Cougars on Tuesday, Feb. 18, was what you expect from this Vols team: an easy 6-0. Although the Cougars are only 3-11-1, it’s still a good sign for a team trying to get back on track.
Although the Vols are having a rough stretch, they still have time to turn it around. They have seven games remaining on their regular season schedule – all being district – and a chance to get that sweet revenge against the teams they lost to.
Their next match will be on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 7 pm against the Roosevelt Rough Riders at Blossom Athletic Center, so make sure to come out and support the Vols!
