NEISD will kick off the 2022-23 Academic UIL season next Thursday, September 29. This year the district will include 29 different contests for all eligible high school students.
UIL offers a multitude of events ranging from literary criticism, to robotics, and even debate. Those who wish to participate are required to attend practice at least once a week, and attend two invitationals in order to qualify for district meets.
The academic event offers students the opportunity to learn about teamwork, and pursue their interest on a scholarly level. They are able to compete against other students with similar passions, and even gain feedback.
This year LEE UIL academics will be coached by several new teachers alongside three returning ones.
“I competed in UIL when I was in high school, and I loved it,” Ms. Sovreyne Chadwick, new UIL science coach, said when asked about her participation this year. “To help my fellow teachers by helping to coach the science team is why I stepped up.”
While Ms. Chadwick isn’t a coach from last year, she does have some experience in the program, “I have coached before, and I am hoping to improve upon what I’ve done before,” Ms. Chadwick said. “I have some ideas percolating in my head, but I will be working with the Lead UIL coach to get more assistance.”
Eligibility to sign up depends on students’ grades throughout the school year. As long as a student maintains a 70 or above average during grading periods he or she is able to join the event of their choice.
