NESA Visual Art major, Bela Siptak, was recently chosen as one of only 50 students across the globe to be featured in the 2023 AP Art and Design Digital Exhibit sponsored by College Board.
The piece that was selected for this honor is a combination of oil pastel and colored pencil, featuring a man holding bread with two birds on his shoulders that Siptak created in her junior year.
“I was trying to experiment with sides, and also with incorporating figures and other things like interacting with the figures, so I used the bread and birds to make a composition,” Siptak said. “I was also playing around with proportions in the figures because the arms were very long.”
She named the piece “Sparrows” after the birds that rest on either side of the subject. “I think, I just really like the sparrows, I just think that they are really small and cute.”
Siptak was as surprised as anyone to learn that her work had been chosen. “I wasn’t expecting it since that one wasn’t even one of my favorite pieces of art that I’ve made, but it’s an honor.”
The digital gallery, featuring all 50 winners, will go live on Dec. 1.
