A new generation on campus decided to take the initiative to go vote in this year’s presidential election. For a long time young people have been the least likely to vote, so it’s great to know that LEE and ISA students went to vote and they are willing to share their experiences.
Brenda Rocha, a senior from NESA said: “It was a good experience, it was pretty calm. I just turned 18 in October. I went to vote early on a school day to go with my parents. The line wasn’t too long because it was early voting. Most people there were between 30-40 and older. It’s important that young people vote because already the older generations know that it’s important for us to go out and get our voices heard and to get what we want in our political system to be represented.”
Daniel Boehme, a senior from ISA said: “It was very smooth. We went on a Saturday for early voting, so there were only a few people in front of us. I would say it went pretty well. I think it’s important for young people to vote because it’s good practice to know the process of voting while you are young, so once you’re older and you’re even more informed than you are now, it’s good to be comfortable with the process.”
It is very important that the young voters get more experience and get more involved in politics, to create a more inclusive democracy that represents the diverse needs of its people, we must empower young voters to keep getting involved and keep educating themselves. If you’re educated and you understand what’s going on, you can fight for that right. It is very important to pay attention to what is happening, and to keep ourselves involved.
