The 2023-24 school year has been riddled with stricter than usual policies on campus. There has been a new push to enforce the dress code, APs and teachers are asking stragglers in the halls where they belong, and now added to that list is the closing of several restrooms on campus and a change in requirements for hall passes.
On Tuesday, Oct. 17 administration sent an email announcing that several restrooms on campus would be closed indefinitely. This change comes in response to several reports of activity that goes against campus policy in the restrooms.
“The reason we implemented the restroom change was that we looked at data of incidents that had occurred from the beginning of school year up until now and it seemed a lot of the incidents happened in the restrooms like fights, large groups of people, and activity that’s obviously against NEISD policy,” Dr. Cal Wulfsburg said.
Additionally, the administration will soon be passing new rules requiring standardized color-coded hall passes, requiring teachers to dispense with the unusual and creative hall passes that are common. This new policy is intended to keep students from wandering away from where they are supposed to be.
“Ms. Henchman and Mr. Escamilla got together and talked about it with the other administration and we’re going to try it out,” Dr. Wulfsburg said. “What our goal is, let’s say a kid is in the fine arts building and let’s say that area is pink they should not be in the main building, it doesn’t go together.”
The administration hopes to lessen the number of disciplinary issues occurring in the restrooms, and lessen the number of students skipping class. None of these changes are final and may be subject to change in the future.
