Tonight the Volunteers will be participating in their first Peanut Butter Bowl, as well as their first face-off against new opponent, the Sotomayor Wildcats at Farris Stadium.
The school became involved when the founders reached out to Daniel Kloza, athletic coordinator and head football coach, and asked if he’d like to partake in this year’s event.
The Peanut Butter Bowls is a fundraiser that was started by Very Bold Ministries, a Chrisitan faith-based nonprofit organization, in Alamo Heights in 2016. The goal was to collect peanut butter and funds to donate to organizations that focused on feeding the children of San Antonio who didn’t have access to food that provided the nutrients they needed.
Coaches are asking that students and teachers alike band together to collect as many peanut butter jars as possible by August 26. Those who can’t donate peanut butter may also do a monetary donation at www.peanutbutterbowl.com where a $2 donation will count as one jar of peanut butter.
“Well, we definitely would like to collect as many jars as possible.” Coach Kloza said when asked about his expectations for LEE’s first Peanut Butter Bowl. It is a great cause and mission to help the community and people who are less fortunate. Giving is always so gratifying and we love the challenge to collect as many as possible. We would love to get a win in our first ever Peanut Butter Bowl. Should be a fun night.”
To add to the excitement the Volunteers will be playing against an up and coming team the Sotomayor Wildcats for their first game.
“Great to play against a new program, Sotomayor. New programs always have a lot of support and a lot of energy.” Coach Kloza said.
Both Coach Kloza and the team have high hopes for Sotomayor, and are ready to welcome them on the field with open arms.
“We have a lot of respect for their staff, we have played against Coach Morales before so I know they will be well coached and ready. Our players are excited and we hope to start the season with a big win,” Coach Kloza said.
So far the Peanut Butter Bowl as a whole has collected over 1000 jars, and counting. Students and staff wishing to donate peanut butter can drop it off at the athletic office. The class that raises the most amount of peanut butter jars will receive free admission to one of the Thursday JV/Freshman football games at LEE.
